Tottenham continue their warpath in what is to be one of the most surprising seasons for Mauricio Pochettino’s depleted team after dispatching Leicester City 3-1 at the weekend.
Indeed, what Pochettino has managed at Tottenham is nothing short of remarkable given the limited resources available to him and the extensive number of injuries which have hampered his squad week in and week out.
However, sitting only five points (60) behind league leaders Manchester City (65) with a game in hand, and nine points ahead of fourth place Manchester United (51), they pose one of the most legitimate challenges to the top two teams out of anyone else at the head of the table.
Their 3-1 performance against Leicester at the weekend certainly wasn’t the best we’ve seen, with most players returning a fairly average rating (according to Sky Sports), but it got the job done. And that’s all teams need at this stage in the season.
Although Christian Eriksen secured the Man of the Match award for his creative and goalscoring efforts, one player who stood out for us, in particular, was French stopper Hugo Lloris.
At 1-0 Lloris correctly predicted Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy’s penalty, dropping down to his right to deny the forward the chance to score with his first touch of the ball. And, for us, this was the turning point in the match.
Instead of it being a close 1-1 heading into the final stages of the game – a score line we’ve seen Claude Puel’s men valiantly defend before – Tottenham netted minutes later to make it 2-0.
The Frenchman made nine saves in total to deny Leicester of a result – a commendable and top class effort as far as we’re concerned, and a priceless contribution to the future of Tottenham’s season. It’s not been an easy campaign for the World Cup winner, who has attracted a lot of criticism from Spurs fans, but this was certainly a reminder of his quality.
