Southampton fans here in the Tavern are hoping their side can avoid relegation from here on in, with Mark Hughes now leading the club’s survival bid.

Southampton made a huge mistake when they decided to appoint Mauricio Pellegrino in the summer months, as the Argentine has taken the Saints towards relegation to the Championship. But, the club have now looked to former Stoke City manager Mark Hughes as their saviour, with eight games left in the Premier League campaign.

However, there are still a number of players that need to step up their game from here on in to help their survival bid, as the international break comes at a perfect time for Hughes to work with his new team. Indeed, with Southampton desperate for a positive run of results when the Premier League resumes, many of our local residents are still unsure on whether appointing the 54-year-old was the correct decision.

Nevertheless, here’s a look at TWO Southampton players that need to look at themselves over the international break…

Guido Carrillo

Guido Carrillo became Southampton’s club-record signing in the January transfer window after joining from AS Monaco, but has failed to live up to expectations during his time on the south coast thus far.

Indeed, with the 26-year-old still yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League since making the move, many of our local residents are starting to think that the Argentine will turn out to be a waste of money.

Therefore, the striker has a lot of thinking to do over the course of the international break, as the Saints will need him to hit the ground running when top-flight action resumes.

Nathan Redmond

Nathan Redmond has had arguably his most disappointing season at St Mary’s since joining back in 2016, with him still searching for his first Premier League goal in the current campaign.

Indeed, the Englishman was one of the Saints’ standout performers last season after producing eight goals and one assist, but has now become all too predictable as a one-dimensional winger.

Therefore, Redmond has to find ways to improve his performances over the course of the international break, with Southampton relying on him to play a huge part in their survival bid.
