The punters at the Football Transfer Tavern have been encapsulated by Liverpool’s play so far this season, and a lot of that is down to the skill of their midfield.

With players like Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana dazzling the Premier League, it is hard to criticise Liverpool’s current midfield.

However it’s not always been like that for the Merseyside club, as they have brought in midfielders in the past who have really failed to have any sort of impact at all, or a positive one at least, especially in the last 10 years.

Arguably one of Liverpool’s worst signings in general, Alberto Aquilani came nowhere near close to meeting expectations at Liverpool.

After impressing in Italy, the central midfielder was brought in to Liverpool for almost £20 million.

However he was soon going back to Italy, as after one season, which saw him play 28 times without offering too much, he was loaned out to Juventus and Milan in consecutive seasons before being sold to Fiorentina.

Christian Poulsen got almost 100 caps for Denmark, did well for clubs like Juventus, Sevilla and Ajax, but for some reason he just could not do it at Liverpool.

The holding midfielder managed just one season on Merseyside and after failing to impress he was moved on to Evian.

It was never expected that Poulsen was going to be the man to light up Anfield, but our punters did hope for a little more than what they got.
