Burnley have made a decent start to life back in the Premier League – and our Clarets fans here in the Transfer Tavern are pretty content!

Apart from the disappointing defeat on the opening day of the season at home to Swansea, they have fared quite well.

They defeated Liverpool 2-0 at Turf Moor and got a point at home to Hull last weekend although the Clarets will feel it should have been 3 had it not been for a moment of magic from Robert Snodgrass in the last minute.

They broke their transfer record twice this summer signing Steven Defour from Anderlecht and Jeff Hendrick from Derby but they still work on a modest budget.

Such a modest budget and with less spotlight on Burnley some of their best players really go under the radar to the rest of the country, and here are THREE that the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern believe are really underrated….

Ben Mee

We’re positive that all the Burnley fans recognise the important job he does, and how well he performs at it but no one else seems to take notice of the Clarets centre back.

He is strong, aerially and on the ground and he is a leader on the pitch.

The Sale-born centre back has been at Burnley since 2012, accumulating 152 league appearances and 5 goals in that time.

Originally of Manchester City, Mee enjoyed loan spells at Leicester City and Burnley before joining the Clarets permanently.

If they are to avoid relegation this season, which would be no mean feat, the Clarets will need Mee to perform consistently at the top of his game.

Dean Marney

Another Burnley player who slips under the radar is the long serving Dean Marney who has been with the Clarets since 2010.

He has made 185 league appearances for Burnley, netting on 8 occasions.

Marney began his career at Tottenham where he made 8 league appearances and actually scored two goals.

He was loaned out numerous times though and enjoyed football league experience at Swindon, QPR, Gillingham, Norwich and Hull before settling in the North West.

In the central midfield area, Marney just helps the game tick on, controlling the ball and passing it quickly to his team mates.

He may well be adored and respected by the figures at Turf Moor but his hard work and talent goes unnoticed and undervalued by the watching public.

He deserves far more recognition then he gets.

Scott Arfield

Arfield is another player who always puts a shift in for Burnley and doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

He has scored some great goals for the Clarets in the Premier League and in the Championship, most notably on the opening day of the Premier League season in 14/15 against Chelsea.

He is very creative but hard working as well.

At 27-years-old the Scotsman should be nearing the peak of his career as he is a mature and well rounded player, but also still has the attributes associated with being a fresh youngster.

Since 2013, he has made 132 appearances for the Clarets and has netted 18 goals.

With Vokes and Gray up front, Arfield knows he has strikers whom he can rely on putting the ball in the back of the net if he finds them with a cross or pass.

Burnley will want him firing on all cylinders if they are to stand a chance of avoiding the drop.
