The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are still reeling after Transfer Deadline Day…

The Blues were one of the most active clubs in the Premier League, with both Marcos Alonso and David Luiz coming in as Antonio Conte continued the rebuild at his new club.

Expectedly, much of the focus of the punters in blue here in the Football Transfer Tavern was firmly centered around who might be joining the club; with so many names touted and linked with a move to the improving London outfit.

However, now that the dust has settled and the Transfer Window is over, the Chelsea faithful are beginning to feel fairly disappointed that Chelsea weren’t more ruthless with some of the members of the Chelsea squad.

More specifically, one particularly vocal Chelsea fan was particularly upset that several players that he feels aren’t good enough to play for the Blues were retained…

Upon further questioning, our landlord tends to agree – and he feels that Chelsea missed a trick not flogging some of the less important members of the Chelsea first team squad.

With that said, here are THREE Chelsea players that are out of their depth – Agreed?

Marco Van Ginkel

Marco Van Ginkel was brought to Chelsea by Jose Mourinho in 2013, and has yet to make an impact at the club.

Granted, several long-term knee injuries have hampered his progression; but our landlord doesn’t think that tells the whole story.

Van Ginkel has had a couple of injury-free loan spells, at clubs including Stoke and PSV – but for the most part he has failed to impress.

He tried to hold down a spot in the Stoke first team, and he was unable to even do that on a continual basis.

Without suffering from so many injuries, things could have been different – but at 23 years old; Marco Van Ginkel is out of his depth in a Chelsea shirt.

Branislav Ivanovic

The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have made a point of mentioning that Branislav Ivanovic has never been good enough to be a Chelsea player, but that simply isn’t true.

The bar staff here in the Football Transfer Tavern remember how packed out the Tavern was when Chelsea beat Napoli in the 2011-12 Champions League; and they remember the roar that went up when Ivanovic scored a last minute winner.

In reality, Ivanovic has been a fantastic servant to Chelsea – but in recent years his form has dipped dramatically.

He is nearing the end of his career, and his performances in the Chelsea first team highlight that fact.

Last season was one to forget for the experienced defender; and if he can’t improve his fortunes quickly this season – it could be the end.

Our landlord thinks it’s time for Ivanovic to take a back seat at Chelsea. In his current form, he is out of his depth.

Asmir Begovic

Asmir Begovic is by no means a bad keeper – in fact, quite the opposite. Begovic is a good keeper; but he just isn’t good enough to be Chelsea number one.

The difference between a good and a great goalkeeper is the ability to pull out unbelievable saves that nobody would expect.

That is the difference between Begovic and a player like Thibaut Courtois.

Begovic does everything that is expected of him; but that is all he does.

He isn’t a keeper that surprises you with excellent saves every single game; and for that reason – Courtois will always be Chelsea number one.

It is unfortunate, as Begovic deserves better than a role on the bench; but he simply isn’t good enough to start for Chelsea.

A back up Chelsea keeper – yes; but if Begovic wants to play each week – he must leave the Blues.
