The Italian is undoubtedly one of the world’s best centre-backs and would be a sensational acquisition for the Blues.
A handful of punters in the Tavern are questioning the age of the defender, as at the age of 29, he certainly is reaching the latter stages of his career.
But, our landlord feels he could be the right man to well and truly shore up the Chelsea defence.
Matteo Darmian
Another player that could find himself at Stamford Bridge is Man Utd defender Matteo Darmian.
The Italian full-back impressed everyone in the Football Transfer Tavern when he joined Louis van Gaal at United, but a post-Christmas slump has lead to his dismissal from the first team under van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho.
He has failed to make a Premier League appearance so far this season, and the punters in the Tavern are expecting him to make a January departure from the club.
Antonio Conte could look to swoop in given his prior experience with Darmian during his tenure in charge of the Italian national side – where the Man Utd man was a key part of his defensive line.
With Branislav Ivanovic looking past his best, Darmian could become the perfect long-term solution to Antonio Conte’s defensive woes.
If he is available for the right price, Darmian could be perfect for Conte.
