Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern had a strong sense of pride in their football club after watching their side narrowly lose the EFL Cup Final 3-2 to Manchester United.
Claude Puel and his men have galvanised the Saints fans in what has been an impressive first season in English football for the French boss so far.
Alongside this, our landlord believes that the south coast club can continue to go from strength to strength this season and such a comment from the Transfer Tavern chief is not one given out lightly!
However, the fans also know that a strong end to the season is vital – especially if they have dreams of pushing on into Europe. Nonetheless, the Saints drinking in the Tavern know that they need to play their part to inspire the players to excel for the rest of the season and have been venting their views on social media.

There is no doubt the love that Saints fans in the Transfer Tavern have for their new Italian man, Manolo Gabbiadini, is very real and this tweeted chant goes to show just that.
The former Napoli forward has managed to bag five goals in his first three games for Southampton and at a reported price of £15m, he is looking like a bargain.
Furthermore, a sensational performance in the League Cup final saw the admiration for Gabbiadini rise among Saints fans and even our landlord is excited by his start to life in England.

In complete contrast to their feelings towards Gabbiadini, many Saints fans watching in the Transfer Tavern picked up on Gary Neville’s commentary regarding the Southampton fans who switched their mobile phone lights on and held them up in the League Cup final.
This was, in fact, a tribute to former owner, Markus Liebherr, who picked the club up out of administration in 2009 and unfortunately died of a heart attack in 2010. Oblivious to the reason of the tribute, Neville likened it to a ‘Celine Dion concert’ during commentary and, as this tweet shows, many Saints fans were unhappy with his remarks.
Though a somewhat more downbeat perspective on things – many glasses have been raised in the Transfer Tavern by Saints fans in memory of Liebherr and in appreciation of what he did for their club.

There is always a sense of sturdiness among Saints fans in the Transfer Tavern. Our landlord admires the fact that even though their team may get dismantled every summer transfer window and they may experience many downs, they always seem to get up again.
There are always positive thoughts around St Mary’s, and like this tweet suggests, even though they lost the EFL Cup Final there will be opportunities to win trophies again, especially with such a prominent academy. There is no doubt that talent will be available to achieve this goal in the future.
