There has been a number of hangovers recorded here at the Football Transfer Tavern in recent weeks, as some of our Southampton regulars have been drowning their sorrows after a mediocre start to their season.

Southampton have been a club renowned for developing youth players who go onto achieve great things.

Gareth Bale, Matt Le Tissier, Theo Walcott and Wayne Bridge are just some of the names to have come through in the past few decades.

After such a successful season last year under Ronald Koeman, Southampton have only won one game this Premier League campaign under new coach Claude Puel.

Koeman departed for Everton and become a symbol of providing youth with a chance to perform at the highest level.

Now under Puel the Frenchman was renowned for allowing a platform for youth to perform.

These are FOUR players our landlord feels will soon be first-teamers in the near future…..

Harrison Reed

After making his debut against Manchester City aged just 18 in 2013, Reed was expected to force his way into the Southampton squad regularly.

Reed made a number of appearances under Maurico Pochettino, but was quickly demoted to the youth team once again under Koeman who wanted Reed to play regularly.

Koeman’s protection of Reed has seen his performance levels increase significantly and it won’t be long before we see him return to the first-team once again.

One step back may just lead to two steps forward in terms of Reed’s progression.

Sam Gallagher

Once again Gallagher was first introduced to the first-team in 2014 aged just 18.

The forward drew similarities to Alan Shearer in his youth career and it was not difficult to see why.

Gallagher was struggling to edge ahead of Graziano Pelle in the first-team so Ronaldo Koeman sent the striker on-loan to MK Dons in 2015.

A poor loan spell seen him return to Southampton to play for the youth team more frequently.

In August, Gallagher joined Blackburn on-loan and has been their standout performer so far this season with 2 goals in 5 football league games.

Blackburn maybe struggling but Gallagher’s confidence is sky high and it won’t be long before we see him as a first-team regular back at Southampton once again.

Ryan Seager

20-year-old Seager has been widely regarded at Southampton for many years and has already experienced first-team football at Southampton briefly.

Seager went out on-loan to Yeovil in January on a month loan.

He scored his first career goal for Crewe on 16 February in a 2–2 draw at Rochdale, but was badly injured in the same game; the injury was subsequently diagnosed as a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and Seager returned to Southampton for rehabilitation.

If Seager can return from such a complex injury then we will see the 20-year-old become a regular feature in the first-team.

Jason McCarthy

The widely regarded right-back is expected to become the next Calum Chambers and become a regular feature at St. Mary’s. Having made his debut aged 19 against Crystal Palace in December 2014, he went onto continue his successes at youth team level.

In October 2015, McCarthy signed a loan deal until February with Wycombe Wanderers, with the deal later extended until the end of the season. At the end of the season, he was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year.

In June 2016, McCarthy was sent out on loan to Walsall for the first six-months of the season.
