Having never experienced a new signing in January under Mauricio Pochettino, our Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that this year he may break this short tradition.
Tottenham are having their worst season in the Premier League for a fair few seasons, as they have enjoyed many a fruit-full year under former Southampton boss Pochettino. Currently sitting in 5th in the Premier League, two points off the Champions League places after dropping points in their last match, early talk of a title challenge is looking increasingly ridiculous.
What many of our regulars in the pub think that Spurs need is a winter injection of new players, often we’ve seen the north London outfit come close in the league in recent seasons, only to seemingly run out of gas.
Maybe it’s down to the lack of recruitment in January, alongside the intense way Spurs play that factors into the ‘running out of gas’ theme. Still, surely with Spurs fighting a seemingly four-way fight for the last two remaining Champions League places, Pochettino will dip his hand in the market to pluck out these two…
Lucas Moura
The Brazilian is seemingly open to a move after being linked with the Premier League for the majority of the January window. The PSG player can play on either flank or down the middle and this kind of versatility is invaluable.
PSG are looking to balance the books after the Neymar deal and Moura is rarely playing this season. He’s come off the bench in all of his five appearances so far, although he has bagged himself a goal in that short time. With that in mind, perhaps Spurs should move for him.
Malcom
Another Brazilian playing in the French League, Malcom can also play right across the attacking line but mainly plays centre or on the right. He’s scored seven goals and provided five assists for his Bordeaux team but the 20-year-old is a regular starter and wouldn’t come as cheap as Moura.
A youthful player may just sit in well with Pochettino’s young and vibrant side, and under the guidance of the Argentine, he could really flourish.
