Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping Jose Mourinho can tie up some midfield reinforcements this January window.

The Red Devils midfield has been hit with injuries and suspensions this season, often leaving them short and lacking in options. Despite this, Mourinho’s men still sit second in the league in their best campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and many of our punters believe that if it wasn’t for the outstanding form of their local rivals City, United would be topping the table.

In a bid to cut down the 11 point gap in the second half of the season, Mourinho would surely be looking to pick up one or two men for the centre of the park, especially with many of his midfielder players contracts expiring this summer.

With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at the possibility of raiding La Liga for a few unsettled centre-midfielders that would welcome a move to the Premier League…

Mateo Kovacic

The Real Madrid man has struggled to hold down a regular spot at the Bernabeu since his move from Inter Milan in 2015. Indeed, with the World Cup year fast approaching, the Croatian will surely be looking to gain some first team minutes in order to cement his spot in the national team.

Although a reported £27m price tag would seem like a bargain in today’s market, Mourinho might have to act fast in order to secure his signature.

Kovacic would add so much class to United’s engine room, helping carve open tight defences.

Gareth Bale

The Welsh international has been linked with Old Trafford it seems in every transfer window in recent years. Despite this, there’s never been a formal offer for the midfielder.

However, Mourinho is looking for a left-footed winger to bring a certain amount of balance to his team and give Rashford and Martial the central role they both crave, a return back to the Premier League may be a good move for Bale.

Landing the former Tottenham man would surely hand United the Premier League title.

Antoine Greizmann

Despite Greizman pledging his allegiance to Atletico Madrid in the summer, it seems that now Diego Simone feels he is destined to lose the midfielder and has granted him a move away.

Having been strongly linked with United for the majority of the summer, a winter move may be on the cards as United look to bring some real quality to the side. It’s been highlighted far to often this season already that United need a creative midfielder in Pogba’s absence and his compatriot really would help on that front.
