Following the dismissal of Mark Hughes new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl was in attendance at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday evening to watch his new side in action against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Austrian manager arrives with a solid reputation in European football and he will need to utilise all of his most defining qualities to turn this Saints side around.
Southampton have been flat, uninspiring and lacking direction since the beginning of last season, and their problems were there for all to see against Spurs.
Collectively they have been lacklustre, but individually there have been plenty of players found wanting so far this season, one of which is academy product, Matt Targett.
After enjoying a productive loan spell at Fulham last season, Targett has returned to Saint Mary’s, but on the evidence of his performance last night he may well face a first-team exile under Hasenhuttl’s leadership.
Indeed, he was one of the worst performers in red and white and the supporters on Twitter made no secret of their displeasure.
Here’s what some Southampton fans had to say about Targett last night…

Targett is getting skinned

Poor old Targett has had a rotten game. 3-0, hopefully all over!

People said that Matt Targett is better than Bertrand never liked him, think he’s poor. Him, JWP and Davis should be no where near this squad, let alone the starting XI. Awful #saintsfc.

Matt Targett is not a Premier League player.
