Tottenham fans here in the Tavern have barely recovered from the antics of last season, with such highs throughout most of the season – the White Hart Lane boys truly surpassed expectation.
They rivaled Leicester for top spot for much of the campaign, and showed off some exceptional English talent in that of Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Kane.
Despite the success of last year, the final few games and that crushing defeat against Newcastle still have some Spurs fans drinking their sorrows away, with the occasional rant at the barman about ‘what could have been’…
However a new season brings a new start and Pochettino will be looking to do his best once again to give the Tottenham boys what they crave so badly.
Currently sitting in seventh place with one win and two draws, Spurs have Stoke City next and will be looking to give some credibility to their unbeaten run by picking up a win.
They brought in Moussa Sissoko on the final day of the season in an attempt to bolster their squad and push them towards a top four spot.
However myself and many of the punters in the Tavern this morning have been talking about where else the manager should have strengthened and this lead to us asking a few questions about some current members of the squad not being good enough for the Tottenham first team.
With that said, here are three Tottenham players that we think are very overrated…
Dele Alli
He got 10 goals last season for Spurs, produced numerous assists and was a key part of the success of last year. However he has only had one season in the Premier League, after moving from MK Dons in 2015.
There has been too much hype for a player who has only played one season in the top flight. I think we saw that during Euro 2016 when the young Englishman looked a shadow of the player he was only several months before.
For me the jury should still be out on Dele, and I think it’s a dangerous game to hype up talent like Alli when he is this young.
The fact he is English never helps anything, just look at poor old Jack Wilshere.
Harry Kane
Another Englishman who has been relentlessly praised. In all fairness after his first successful season I doubted him and he proved me wrong by a mile, bagging a staggering 28 goals last year!
But as someone who watched Kane during some of his loan spells, I never watched him play and considered he would one day be valued at £60-£70 million. And I am still not sure he should be.
This season will really prove the doubters (like me) wrong if he is successful, but once again I would like to highlight the damage that can be done from over hyping young English talent.
Moussa Sissoko
Yet to kick a ball in the white strip of Tottenham, the Frenchman still makes the list. Despite a good Euro 2016 performance, Sissoko has been massively overrated by his price tag alone.
It can all be put into perspective when Newcastle fans are cheering him out the door (especially at that fee) and Tottenham fans are bemused by their deadline day purchase.
Hot and cold at Newcastle, he had some sensational moments that would have Toon fans out of their seats. But these seemed to be all too rare, summed up by the fact that he only scored 12 goals in all competition over 5 seasons.
It is not the fans who are overrating Sissoko but Daniel Levy when he dished out a considerable price for an average player.
