Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Cardiff City on New Year’s Day with a point to prove after falling to a shock 3-1 defeat against Wolves in their final fixture of 2018.
Within 26 minutes Tottenham had more or less wrapped up the points after taking a three goal lead at Cardiff. The relegation-threatened side have started to find some form in recent weeks but the visitors had no problem in expressing their superiority in a pulsating opening to the game.
It was a complete team performance from a Spurs side who played with the imperious swagger of a genuine title contender, with Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks once again bossing the midfield.
The budding partnership is one which few could have seen coming, but both players have stepped up and delivered a handful of fine performances of late.
Winks, in particular, looks like a complete player with all the attributes to blossom into a mainstay at the heart of Pochettino’s midfield, and the Spurs supporters certainly seem to think they’ve got a gem on their hands.
Indeed, Winks came in for plenty of gushing praise on Twitter yesterday both during and after the game, with his ability to keep things ticking over particularly catching the eye.
The England international has really begun to showcase his talent this season after suffering a stop-start 2017/18 campaign, and if he continues to improve in 2019 there’s no doubt he could be a regular in Gareth Southgate’s starting eleven by the time Euro 2020 gets underway.
Here’s what the Spurs fan had to say about Winks’ performance yesterday…

For me @HarryWinks should be the 1st name on the team sheet for centre midfield. We look a lot more composed and fluid with him dictating pace of play. @SpursOfficial

@HarryWinks is no doubt a future club captain, watching him off the ball pointing and marshaling people all over the pitch. Reading the game and responding. #CARTOT #coys
