Arsenal fans here in the Tavern have been less than impressed with their sides showing this season, as they look set to miss out on Champions League football for a second successive season.
Arsene Wenger has enjoyed arguably the worst year as manager of Arsenal Football club since taking over back in 1996, but as the longest serving manager in the Premier League they’ve been skeptical to see the back of the Frenchman after countless years of service. Although, fans are starting to lose their patience with the 68-year-old, as this season’s performances have been far from the star-studded Gunners side that fans have been accustomed to.
Nevertheless, after seeing the reaction given off by fans and the footballing world after welcoming Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Emirates, Wenger is now hungry for more signings as he looks towards possible targets in the summer. As he’s planning a double swoop for the highly-rated Brazilian winger Malcom, and Atletico Madrid’s world-class goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Indeed, after already attempting to bring winger Malcom to North London during the January transfer window, Wenger has identified the 20-year-old as a player that he’d love to have under his wing as a potential future star. On the other hand, Jan Oblak has been a goalkeeper that’s caught the eye with his shot-stopping abilities in Spain, with Arsenal having shown previous interest in the Slovenian international.
Nevertheless, here’s a look at TWO players who could potentially follow this world-class pairing to the Emirates in the summer…
Max Meyer
The 22-year-old has been dubbed as the German Santi Cazorla by our punters, and if the Spaniard’s performances in his early days at the Emirates are anything to go by then he could become quite the talent. A player that’s created a huge buzz in the Bundesliga for current side Schalke, as he looks like being the next big thing to break out of a flourishing German youth system.
And, after receiving interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides over the past six months, the future of the German is uncertain with his contract set to run out in the summer months. Although, Arsenal made a late attempt to bring the Spurs target to the Emirates on deadline day, but with this coming to nothing it now looks as if they’ve turned their attention to signing him in the summer as they await his decision.
Kostas Manolas
The Roma guardian has developed into one of the world’s most established central-defenders, as the Italian capital of Rome seems to have brought out the inner gladiator in the Greek international. With bags of pace to burn and one of the most agile based defensive games, the 26-year-old has been a difficult barrier to overcome for opposition attacks in a demanding Serie A.
Indeed, with the Gunners keeping a close eye on the progression and performances of the defender, they attempted to make a late deadline day swoop in the hope of bolstering their woeful defence, but unfortunately for the Gunners this came to very little. But, with the summer transfer window now opening in the month of May, they’ll be looking for a positive finish to the season in order to provide the foundations to go out and target Kostas Manolas once again.
