If there is any side that can boast developing young players at the moment, it’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the last few seasons we’ve seen manager Mauricio Pochettino and predecessor Tim Sherwood put their faith in their academy and young signings.

Last season alone we saw players like Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier guide the Lilywhites to a record third-place finish.

A number of academy players also made up last year’s side such as Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb.

There are a number of young players slowly making a name for themselves this season with some even making the squad for their EFL Cup games.

That, combined with Pochettino’s emphasis on fitness and pressing, means you’d find it difficult to create a young five-a-side team capable of keeping up the same intensity as Spurs’ if you looked all over the country.

Here are FIVE players our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern would pick…..

GK – PAU LOPEZ

Pau Lopez is not a Spurs academy player, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a man who has clocked up 38 first-team La Liga appearances in any five-a-side team.

Lopez was signed on loan from Espanyol this year as cover for Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

Pochettino knows the 21-year-old well from his time in Spain and sees something in the youngster.

Poch knows a thing or two about young players so if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for us.

DEF – CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS

Still only 18-years-old, Cameron Carter-Vickers looks like the next academy player who could make the Spurs first-XI.

The American is quick and strong and represents the perfect player to cover the back of a five-a-side pitch and provide a shield in front of the goal.

Pochettino is clearly a fan of the youngster after giving him his debut in Spurs’ 5-0 thrashing over Gillingham in the EFL Cup third round game.

MID – DELE ALLI

If there’s any man under the age of 21 in the country – or the world for that matter – who you’d take in a five-a-side team, it’s Dele Alli.

The youngster wasted no time in establishing himself in the Spurs first team after his move from MK Dons, and has since made 41 league appearances for Pochettino’s side, scoring 13 goals.

The midfielder can do it all – shoot, pass, dribble, tackle – and may well be the closest player we’ll see to Steven Gerrard in his prime for a while.

MID – HARRY WINKS

While Dele Alli is ripping it up with the first team, another Englishman is generating a lot of hype for Tottenham.

Harry Winks would be no stranger to the hustle and bustle of five-a-side football having trained with the Spurs squad for a while now.

He was even named among the substitutes as far back as 2014.

The 20-year-old has a great touch and vision and would be the perfect man to move the ball around the five-a-side pitch at pace.

FOR – MARCUS EDWARDS

While Marcus Edwards has spent most of his fledgling playing in midfield, we at the Tavern think he could make it anywhere in attack.

With Winks and Alli locking down the midfield, we’d be tempted to have Edwards take his burst of pace and delicate dribbling ability to wreak havoc up front.

The 17-year-old has already drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi after scoring some incredible solo goals with the Spurs youth sides.

And if he becomes half as good a finisher as the Argentine Spurs fans know they’ll have a gem on their hands.
