Liverpool’s major transfer business so far this summer has generally consisted of incomings rather than outgoings.
Whilst the arrivals of Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have been confirmed, Emre Can, who joined Juventus as a free agent, remains the only significant departure from the first team squad.
Jurgen Klopp’s squad still has some dead weight in it though. Those individuals will need to be moved on sooner rather than later. Doing so will not only open up squad spaces and release some wage budget, but it can also do wonders for squad harmony to remove those who aren’t able to contribute enough at first team level.
Klopp will already have gone through every player currently on the books at Anfield and made his decisions on who must be moved on during this transfer window.
After a stellar debut campaign for the club last season, Andrew Robertson has made himself first choice at Anfield. Not that Moreno could offer much of a fight.
The Spaniard has been with the club for 4 seasons but has never managed to consistently convince as an elite level left-back. That was fine when the Reds were simply scrapping for Champions League football, but now the club have loftier ambitions.
Liverpool’s progress has left Moreno behind.
In July 2014, Liverpool paid £20 million to Benfica in return for Lazar Markovic. 4 seasons and 3 loan spells later and that deal has proven to have been a colossal waste of money by the English outfit.
Now the Serbian is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield, but rather that lose him on a free next summer, Liverpool should cash in now for the best price they can get.
During the 2013/14 season, when Sturridge struck 21 Premier League goals as Liverpool finished runners up, few would have believed that 4 seasons later the England forward would have scored less than 20 further top flight goals.
This is mainly due to the crippling injury record that Sturridge has had since that season.
Liverpool have now moved on without him, and Klopp has constructed an attacking unit too fast and physical for Sturridge to ever fit into. Now is the time for the striker to move on and try to rediscover his form and fitness elsewhere.
