There’s not been much to get Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern excited about this summer. The supporters are yet to welcome a big name at St Mary’s so far.

New boss Mauricio Pellegrino has his hands full with current rebel Virgil van Dijk.

The highly rated defender, 26, is training alone at his club’s Staplewood HQ after making it clear to boss Pellegrino that he wants to leave the club.

Liverpool have been the team in hot pursuit of Van Dijk’s signature, but according to reports, fears over their relationship with Southampton is set to cost the Dutchman his move.

The Reds were forced to cool off their chase after Southampton complained to the FA over foul play.

Pellegrino still has to address a number of issues that held the Saints back from a successful league campaign last time out. Getting rid of several of the Saints dead wood would be a good place to start.

Steven Davis

Ex-Saints boss Claude Puel appointed Davis new club captain in January, despite him being in and out of the team last season.

Having joined the club from Rangers in 2012, the Northern Ireland international midfielder has made 148 appearances in all competitions for Southampton.

However, Pellegrino needs to make a statement as he attempts to push the south-coast club to the top of the Premier League.

Jordy Clasie

The Dutchman has not enjoyed the best of spells in England since his switch from Feyenoord in 2015.

Clasie, who was signed by Ronald Koeman started just 12 times in the league for Claude Puel last season.

The 26-year-old is playing second fiddle to Oriel Romeu and his current form has failed to earn him an appearance in the national side. Southampton should cash in whilst they still can.
