Since the inception of the Premier league a number of years ago, many of us have seen some goals with can only be described as majestic and out of this world. However, while there has been a number of goals which have left us sat in the stands salivating over what we have just witnessed, which handful out of all these stunners are the best of all time in the Premier League?
10. Gustavo Poyet (Chelsea 4-0 Sunderland, August, 1999) – The Uruguayan Midfielder is considered one of the most technically gifted player to ever set foot in the Premier League and the then 31 year old fully demonstrates this technical grace as he superbly volleys a Gianfranco Zola through ball in to the top corner.
9. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool 2-1 Middlesbrough, August, 2008) – Steven Gerrard is a player who has become known both for club and country as a player who can hit the ball outside the box. However, this goal has to go down as one of the 30 year olds best ever, as he struck a shot on the volley from way outside the box and into the far top corner, leaving the Middlesbrough keeper with absolutely no chance.
8. Tony Yeboah (Leeds 1-0 Liverpool, August, 1995) – The loveable Ghanaian is a player who was loved not only by those at Elland Road but by almost every fan in the Premier League. His goal against Liverpool typifies the quality with the 44 year old possessed as he crashed home a volley from outside the box, rattling the bar on the way in.
7. Matt Le Tissier (Southampton 2-1 Newcastle, October, 1993) –Playing outside of the elite top four, Le Tissier was often a player who went unnoticed by many, but his technical skill and ability to strike the ball was up there with the best of them in the Premier League. His jinking run against the Toon, lifting the ball past two players before coolly stroking it in the bottom corner demonstrated why the player will always be not only a Southamption legend but a Premier League great.
6. Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd 2-0 Portsmouth, January, 2008) – While the Portuguese superstar undoubtedly scored a number of high quality goals during his time at Manchester United, his unstoppable free kick against Portsmouth that left keeper David James rooted to the spot.
5. Wayne Rooney (Man Utd 2-1 Newcastle, April, 2005) – The United youngster showed why he is seen as one of the best players in world football at the moment, as he struck an unbelievable volley from outside the box which could do nothing but sail in the top corner.
4. Eric Cantona (Man Utd 5-0 Sunderland, December, 1996) – While the Frenchman has had ups and downs during his playing career and in his personal life, when Cantona is good he’s very good and his goal against Sunderland as he effortlessly floats the ball over the keeper into the top corner helps to show Cantona at his best.
3. Alan Shearer (Newcastle 2-1 Everton, December, 2002) – The former England international will always be considered one of the best Premier League strikers of all time and this goal only helps to enforce that statement as the now 40 year old hits a venomous shot that leaves the Toffee’s keeper with no chance as it flies into the net.
2. Dennis Bergkamp (Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal, March, 2002) – From a personal perspective, I believe Dennis Bergkamp is the most technically gifted player to ever apply his trade in England. This goal against Newcastle helps to show the Dutchman in all his glory in what can only be described as truly a wonder goal.
1. Paulo Di Canio (West Ham 2-1 Wimbledon, March, 2000) – One of the Premier League’s most memorable players, firstly for his actions against a certain referee during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, but most of all for the unbelievable scissor kick for West Ham from the edge of the box which left those at Upton Park speechless and the rest of us with a new number one in the list of the Premier Leagues best ever goals.
