With so much made about the England captaincy these days, the punters in the Transfer Tavern are in big debate over their lunchtime pints.
As Wayne Rooney’s tenure at Three Lions skipper takes another sour turn, Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has been handed the armband for tonight’s game with Slovenia.
While that is currently only an arrangement for tonight, there are a few options to replace the nation’s record goalscorer as captain on a full-time basis.
And it’s not only the 26-year-old Reds ace in with a shout.
Tottenham’s Eric Dier could be an option going forward as he replaces Rooney in the holding midfield role this evening.
Elsewhere, Manchester City’s John Stones’ upward trajectory under Pep Guardiola could see the classy central defender develop his leadership qualities.
Meanwhile, while those two represent long-term options, Chelsea’s Gary Cahill could do a job for a few years should Rooney fail to recapture his form whatsoever.
Same goes for Chris Smalling, a teammate of ‘Wazza’s’ at Old Trafford.
