The Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Mauricio Pochettino can bring in some real quality to the squad in the summer to further strengthen the squad.

After coming back from a long-term injury, Toby Alderweireld is looking to force his way back into the first team. However, it seems that Pochettino may have different plans for the Belgium centre-half. Having been left out of the squad to fly to Juventus in the last 16 Champions League match, the rumours are flying around the bar among our regulars about him potentially leaving in the summer.

Having not yet agreed to a contract extension on his current deal, Alderweireld could be unhappy with being left out of the squad and that may impact his decision on his Spurs future. While it would be a gutting loss, Tottenham have shown they can replace key players before.

With that being said, our landlord takes a look at TWO other defenders in Europe that Pochettino may look to if Alderweireld is to leave in the summer window…

Salif Sane

The Hannover 96 defender is having a fantastic season in the Bundesliga. Indeed, he is strong in the air, loves a tackle and can play a short pass if needed to. The idea of his wonderful simplicity complimenting Jan Vertonghen’s class and Davinson Sanchez’s raw power should be a very exciting one.

The Senegalese centre-back is always looking to pop a shot off at goal to given the opportunity. At 27-years-old, Sane is coming into his prime as a footballer and them many years of experience could help Spurs in their new home next season.

The French defender is learning his trade in La Liga with Atletico Madrid, one of the best defensive units in Europe. Indeed, the 21-year-old is an up and coming centre-back and, from what we’ve seen this season, could be a top-class defender in years to come.

He needs to work on holding up the ball, but with age will come experience though his tackling and reading of the play certainly make up for it. Many of our regulars have been impressed with the young man so far this campaign and would love to see him in a Spurs shirt.
