Tottenham Hotspur: Fans discuss transfer reports linking Matias Vecino with potential Spurs move

Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Inter Milan star Matias Vecino, according to the Daily Star via @thespursweb

Vecino was originally mentioned during discussions between the clubs over Christian Eriksen back in January but a move failed to materialise. Antonio Conte has now decided that he is surplus to requirements and is looking to offload the Uruguay international in the summer.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho admires the player but he could face competition from Premier League sides Arsenal and Everton, who have also registered their interest in the veteran (as per Daily Star). Eric Dier has shifted into defence in Spurs’ most recent games and has made it clear he wants to stay at the back, so Mourinho is looking to strengthen his midfield options.

After arriving at the San Siro from Fiorentina for £21.6m in 2017, Vecino has scored two goals and supplied two assists for Conte’s side this season, taking 1.4 shots per game, averaging 1.7 tackles and completing 1.4 clearances per game on average (WhoScored).

His style of play could benefit Mourinho, as his strengths lie in blocking the ball, and the Portuguese is keen to find a defensive midfielder who can also give the backline a lot more protection.

He has earned a solid WhoScored rating of 6.82 for his efforts this season, which is an upgrade on the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Moussa Sissoko but falls short of the club’s record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Given his £16.65m valuation, the Spurs head coach may feel the money might be better spent elsewhere, as Mourinho knows he faces a difficult transfer window with a limited budget.

Naturally, many of the Tottenham faithful reacted to the transfer link to Vecino on social media, with one fan branding the club’s interest as “nonsense” and another adding Milan should “keep the money” they feel the Italian side owe for Eriksen.
