Toby Alderweireld is one of the best players in the world in his position. The Belgian defender has shown time and time again that he’s a world-class centre-back and it should be in every Tottenham fans’ interest to see him tied down to a long-term contract in North London.

Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are one of the best defensive partnerships in the world and the pair have been sublime for both Tottenham and Belgium over the last few years. At the moment, Vertonghen is out injured and the club has had to rely solely on the former Atletico man to shine for them, which he has so far done alongside the young Colombian, Davinson Sanchez.
Alderweireld’s situation at Tottenham is a tricky one. The defender’s contract is set to expire this summer but the club have the option to extend that by 12 months. However, if the club take up that one-year extension they’d also be activating a £25 million release clause that would see the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona sniffing around for him, especially at the cut-price of just £25 million.

The Lilywhites would love to see Alderweireld tied down to a long-term deal and will hope he doesn;t leave in January or the summer.
