According to reports, Jan Vertonghen may have played his last game for Tottenham, with the Belgium international admitting a return to Ajax has “always been sort of in the planning”.
The Premier League is on hold until at least April 30th, and it is still not clear how the extended season will affect players whose contracts run out this summer. Vertonghen is one such player, with the Spurs fan favourite yet to follow in Toby Alderweireld’s footsteps and sign a new deal in north London.
At 32, there’s no question Super Jan’s best days are behind him, taking plenty of criticism for his displays this season, but that hasn’t stopped some fans from getting emotional after the latest news, which comes via Football Oranje. Vertonghen has refused to rule out an immediate return to Ajax, after being linked with a move to his former side in January.
“Who knows. It’s always been sort of in the planning, yes,” he said. Fans have been responding to the news on Twitter, with one calling it ‘heart breaking’…
Now that’s heart breaking.

A good move for all imo. Jan has been an incredible servant to the club. But I believe the time is right to move on.
