Tottenham: Hakim Ziyech leads four-man shortlist to replace Christian Eriksen

Ajax star Hakim Ziyech is reportedly Tottenham’s ideal player to replace Christian Eriksen next summer, who is set to leave Spurs when his contract expires.

Will Ziyech be a good replacement for Eriksen?

According to 90min, the 26-year-old Moroccan international heads the four-man shortlist Spurs currently have of names to replace Eriksen in 2020, with Bruno Fernandes, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Brais Mendez all reportedly also being eyed by the club.

Ziyech was hotly tipped with a move away from Ajax this summer after a fantastic season with the Dutch giants (per BBC Sport), however, the former FC Twente attacker renewed his current deal with Erik ten Haag’s side in the summer, keeping the playmaker in Holland until June 30, 2022 (per Ajax’s official website).

Replacing Eriksen, who admitted following the Champions League final that he was ready to move on from Spurs, will be a big task for Mauricio Pochettino. Still, with the club showing this summer that they are now willing to break the bank on players, with Tottenham spending a club-record fee for Tanguy Ndombele (per BBC Sport), signing Ziyech could well be on the cards, and his numbers prove to be positive reading.

With stats from Transfermarkt showing that the Moroccan international managed an incredible 21 goals and 24 assists in all competitions for Ajax last season, Ziyech’s output shows that the winger is more than ready for the step-up to a bigger league.

Indeed, the list of Ajax players to make the switch to Tottenham in recent years is quite remarkable, with Eriksen as well as the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Davison Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld all representing the two clubs this decade (per Transfermarkt), and Ziyech could seemingly see this successful line as encouragement to move to the Premier League side.

Replacing Eriksen will be one of the most important decisions Pochettino does during his tenure as Tottenham manager, and signing Ziyech could be the most sensible option for the Argentine coach to take.

The Ajax star has proven over the past 12 months to be an exciting player who is ready for the next step-up in his footballing career, and with Tottenham having a great track record of integrating previous names from the Eredivisie giants into their squad, it could be a move that benefits both parties almost perfectly.

Tottenham fans, would Ziyech be the best replacement for Eriksen? Let us know!
