Former footballer Steve Nicol believes Christian Eriksen’s best hopes of winning a league title lie in Serie A with Inter, and has urged the midfielder to forget about securing a long-rumoured move to Spain.

Real Madrid have been linked with the Denmark international since the summer, though Nicol thinks that if Eriksen is to depart Spurs, a move to Serie A would be his ideal destination.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol insisted that Eriksen will have a desire to win a league title which will not be achievable at the likes of Tottenham or Manchester United – while a move to either of the two main La Liga giants is simply unrealistic.
As a result, Nicol encouraged the 27-year-old to seek a move to Antonio Conte’s side, who currently top the Serie A standings on goal difference.
He said: “I think he would make them better, absolutely. He could take them to that next step, in my opinion.
“If you’ve got [Romelu] Lukaku and Lautaro [Martinez] not only getting fed by this guy, but him scoring goals as well, if you can stick a couple of defensive midfielders in the middle of the park with him, then I think this makes Inter better.
“This actually makes sense. This guy ain’t going to Barcelona, he’s not going to Real Madrid, either. So Inter makes complete sense for me and I think it makes sense for him, too.
“He wants to win a title. Serie A would be his best chance.”
Statistically speaking, it is difficult to argue with Nicol’s suggestion that Inter would present Eriksen with his best chance of domestic glory given the Nerazzurri’s current position in the Serie A table.
Eriksen has been without a league medal since winning three with Ajax between 2011 and 2013, while his best finish with Spurs of second in the 2016/17 season seems a far cry from where his side are currently.
Therefore, securing a move would perhaps be his best bet of collecting silverware – and with Liverpool appearing to have already wrapped things up in England, it certainly seems a move abroad would be on the cards if Nicol is right about Eriksen’s desire for a major trophy.
