According to recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur have made an approach to sign Argentinian forward, Angel Di Maria.
The report by L’Equipe (via the Daily Mail) claims that Spurs have contacted the Paris Saint-Germain player regarding a free summer transfer to north London, as the 32-year-old’s contract in Paris is due to expire at the end of the season.

L’Equipe do state that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have offered the £25.2m-rated (Transfermarkt) man a new deal which would extend his stay at the Ligue 1 side, however, the conditions of this proposed contract – which includes a reduction to the midfielder’s €1 million (£888k) monthly wage – ‘do not satisfy’ the former Real Madrid man and, as such, ‘no agreement has yet been reached’.
Of course, if Daniel Levy could lure such an experienced player at the highest level to north London on a free transfer, it would be a real bargain.
Transfer Tavern Take
While Di Maria is naturally a winger, he has been played in a variety of positions across the PSG attack so far this season, versatility which could potentially provide Jose Mourinho with greater depth in a number of positions.
And, with former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel previously heaping praise on the 32-year-old for his “skills”, the fact that he “always plays for the team” and stating that he is a “gifted” player, presumably due to the 36 goals and 49 assists the Argentine contributed under the German coach, it would appear, should Spurs indeed go on to land Di Maria, they will be gaining a fantastic footballer.
Furthermore, perhaps the position in which Tottenham most require strengthening is the attacking midfielder role – a position in which Di Maria has featured in this season – with the barely used Dele Alli currently being Mourinho’s only option as an out-and-out number 10.

Rather coincidentally, Alli has been heavily linked with a move to PSG over the January transfer window, which, if Tottenham are truly interested in Di Maria, may well open the door to a potential swap deal of some kind.
