Tottenham Hotspur: Club planning swoop for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to try and sign Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos during the current January transfer window, that is according to a report from Football Insider.

It is suggested that Spurs are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old and may submit a bid ahead of the deadline on the 31st.

Spurs are likely to attempt to sign a new striker this month, after their one and only recognised first-team player in that position, Harry Kane, was ruled out until at least April after having surgery on a hamstring injury he sustained against Southampton on New Year’s Day (tottenhamhotspur.com).

Several names have been linked with the club already, including AC Milan forward Krzysztof Piatek (Sky Sports) and Paris Saint Germain hitman Edinson Cavani (El Pais).

However, according to Football Insider, it is Morelos who has been identified as the man who can provide cover for Kane until the end of the season and ultimately compete with him up front for the foreseeable future.

Football Insider had previously revealed in December that Rangers intended to reject any bids for the Colombian international this month. But their resolve would certainly be tested if a club with the financial clout of Tottenham came knocking with a bid.

If Spurs did sign Morelos this month, then it could turn out to be an absolute stroke of genius by them. After all, this is a striker who has netted 28 goals in just 35 appearances in all competitions this term including 14 in 14 Europa League matches (Transfermarkt).

Whilst he may be playing in the Scottish Premiership, which is undoubtedly not at the same standard as the Premier League, he can only score against the teams put in front of him and he has certainly done that so far. And as mentioned, he has scored plenty in the Europa League too which proves that he can do it against a higher calibre of opposition – indeed he has netted against the likes of Porto and Feyenoord.

Put simply, he is a proven goal scorer, which is what Tottenham currently need with Kane on the sidelines. He would come in full of confidence given his record this season and would add some firepower to their frontline in the absence of the England captain.

Added to that, he is still just 23-years-old, meaning that his game could still significantly improve in the coming years. Therefore, signing Morelos would not only offer Spurs cover during Kane’s current injury lay-off, but it would also be an investment for the future.
