Tottenham Hotspur are looking to strengthen their squad, and it looks like they are close to adding a Premier League defender to their ranks following the latest reports.
According to Football Insider, Spurs have reached an agreement with Wolves over the transfer of defender Matt Doherty. The North London side have agreed to pay Wolves an initial £12 million rising to a potential £16 million with add-ons.

They are also confident that they can complete the transfer before the Premier League starts so that Doherty will be available for their first match, which is against Everton.
With Kyle Walker-Peters signing on a permanent for Southampton this summer, Jose Mourinho would have lacked in depth in the full-back position. But with this possible signing, he has two good right-backs at his disposal.
Defensively Doherty and current Spurs right-back Serge Aurier had very good seasons last campaign, as the Wolves ace managed 1.5 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, and 1.3 clearances a game, per WhoScored, whilst Aurier managed 2.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 2.5 clearances a game.
Offensively as well they are both good options to have at full-back, as Doherty has four goals and provided three assists, whilst Aurier has one goal and four assists.
These stats show that with the addition of Doherty, Spurs are very strong in the right-back position. The club could have a lot of fixtures to play next season if they advance into Europe via the Europa League qualifiers, so quality in depth is important and the signing gives Mourinho a very welcome selection dilemma, and all for a fee which is quite minimal for an established Premier League defender who is still only 28-years-old.
