Tottenham Hotspur fans were left confused as to why Christian Eriksen was allowed to take a penalty after his miss in the Carabao Cup defeat to League Two Colchester United.
Spurs lost 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in the 90 minutes. The Danish playmaker was one of two players to miss a penalty for the north London club with Lucas Moura hitting the bar (via BBC).
The rage over Eriksen taking a penalty comes after he missed two during the club’s pre-season games over the summer (via Evening Standard).
Eriksen endured a tough summer after he wasn’t afforded the opportunity to leave the Lilywhites despite stating his desire to do so. Just days after the Champions League final against Liverpool, the Denmark international said he wanted to leave Spurs to ‘start a new challenge’ when speaking to Ekstra Bladet (via Evening Standard).
Eriksen has also had a tough start to the new season, with former Spurs defender Alan Hutton claiming the playmaker has had his head turned (via Football Insider).
Fans seemed to be fed up of the Dane, and following his penalty miss, took to Twitter and questioned the decision to let him take a penalty.
