Tottenham Hotspur will not be signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window according to manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese international was linked with a move to north London throughout the summer (Sky Sports), whilst there have also been reports that Mourinho was set to target him in the winter window (90min.com).
There is no doubting that the 25-year-old is a quality player. Indeed, he has already scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt).
However, speaking ahead of Spurs’ clash against Manchester United in the Premier League, the 56-year-old claimed that Fernandes would not be a target for the club in January, indicating that they couldn’t afford him.
“I would definitely say no because Bruno is a player of a level and value that is not for us,” he said (via Sky Sports).
Those comments haven’t gone down too well with several Tottenham fans, many of whom are unhappy that it appears as though the club refuse to spend big money on top quality players.
Here is how some responded on Twitter after seeing that Mourinho had ruled out signing the Sporting Lisbon star (look away now, Daniel Levy)…
Such a small club mentality I hate this ownership #enicout

So we’re not going to compete for the best players then. Just the promising ones. Imagine if Daniel Levy was chairman of Liverpool. That would mean no VVD, no Alisson, no Fabinho etc etc which would also mean no Champions Lge 🏆 and no PL🏆next may.
Good project that 👍

So we’re a small club then. Brilliant

This doesn’t make sense, we have the second highest paid manager in the world but cant buy good players?

rake in the money from being in champions league, tv money domestically and abroad , one of the highest season ticket prices in the country, smallest wage bill out of +”top 6″ and yet won’t buy players lol typical Levy

This does not sound good. Pochettino was not backed and could Mourinho be in the same position?
