Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting to damning historical comments made by former manager Andre Villas-Boas, which have recently re-emerged.
A year after being sacked by Spurs, the man often dubbed ‘AVB’ did an interview with Portuguese television where he admitted that the club failed to sign any of the four key targets he had identified in the summer of 2012.
“The chairman proposed a challenge to increase Tottenham’s competitive level, but immediately [Luka] Modric left and we didn’t get any of the targets I had identified such as João Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damião,” said Villas-Boas (via Football.London).
“These were promises that were not kept. I had a group of players I had not chosen. In two years I lost [Rafael] van der Vaart, Modric, (Gareth) Bale, and all the promises made were unfulfilled.”
Whilst Tottenham did sign several good players in that summer, notably Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Hugo Lloris (Transfermarkt), several of those brought in were not the manager’s first choices.
The now Marseille manager only last 17 months in the dugout at White Hart Lane, winning 45 and drawing 18 of the 80 games he took charge of. He was ultimately sacked after a heavy 5-0 loss against Liverpool in December 2013 (BBC Sport).
