Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, according to Football.London. As per the report, the Portuguese international is set to join Spurs on an initial loan deal with the option of a permanent switch.
Fernandes, 21, has been linked with a plethora of Premier League clubs over the course of the January window, with Wolves, Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester United all reportedly chasing his signature. Now, with a deal apparently close, the 21-year-old could provide much-needed cover in the middle of the park after Moussa Sissoko was ruled out with a long-term injury.
The youngster has struggled for game time in the league this season, making just seven appearances, featuring for just 11 minutes since October. Still, he has been involved in the Portuguese national set-up of late and his passing accuracy of 85.3% (per WhoScored) is higher any of Spurs’ current midfielders aside from Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele (also injured) and Harry Winks, who has been linked away.
