Tottenham Hotspur: Fans slam transfer link to Atletico Madrid veteran

Share

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Atletico Madrid star Stefan Savic in the summer, according to Todofichajes via @RickSpur.

Although Savic failed to impress during his brief stint with Manchester City, he has turned his career around at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The Spurs head coach recently revealed he is in the market for a new centre-back, as it seems he could face an exodus of defenders in the coming weeks, with Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth both linked to an exit.

Vertonghen is likely to leave for free as his contract is set to expire in a matter of weeks.

The Spanish outlet reports the Portuguese is keen to sign Savic as he considers him to be a solid option at the back.

Ever since he arrived in Madrid from Fiorentina for £22.5m back in 2015, the 29-year-old has put in a string of defensive shifts for Diego Simeone’s side, making 1.1 tackles per game, averaging 1.4 interceptions, and completing a staggering 4.2 clearances on average this term (WhoScored).

On the other hand, Vertonghen has provided 2.1 tackles on average, made 1.6 interceptions, and registered 2.9 clearances per game in the Premier League (via WhoScored).

In comparison, Eric Dier has registered 1.4 tackles per game, attempted just under 1 interception, and produced 2.6 clearances on average, despite the fact he has been moved out of position by Mourinho.

Moreover, it seems many Spurs fans haven’t forgotten about Savic’s tough time at the Etihad.

Indeed, loads of supporters slammed the transfer link on social media, with one fan tweeting “no way,” and another unfairly adding “even Dier is better.” On top of that, one fan even claimed that he would be “another Fazio,” referencing the Argentina defender who flopped at the club before moving to Roma.
