Tottenham are hopeful they can secure the signature of Giovani Lo Celso this summer for what would be a club record fee (Diario de Sevilla via Sport Witness).
The Argentine’s current club Real Betis is reportedly asking for €75million which appears to be the reason why the deal has not been done yet.
Spurs have already broken their transfer record this summer with the purchase of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for €60m.
And the Lilywhites have already been able to recoup some of the money they spent on the midfielder by offloading Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid for £20m.
However, it is still thought that the north London outfit may have to sell Christian Eriksen in order to afford the midfielder.
Lo Celso played in both central midfield and in a more advanced role in La Liga last season and scored an impressive nine goals and provided five assists in 32 appearances as Betis finished a respectable tenth.
He also played in all six of Argentina’s Copa America games, scoring one and assisting one as the South American side went out in the semi-finals to Brazil.
However, you do worry slightly how Mauricio Pochettino aims to accommodate the 23-year-old given the number of options he now has in midfield.
Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko formed a strong partnership last season which was singled out for praise by the Argentine manager during the Christmas period.
And with Ndombele now entering the fray you start to wonder where Lo Celso would fit in, especially if Eriksen stays because further forward behind Harry Kane you have a number of players who performed brilliantly last season.
Heung-min Son showed once more what an integral part of the team he is with 20 goals, Lucas Moura scored a vital hat-trick in the Champions League semi-final to demand more of a starting role in this campaign, and Dele Alli is also a regular in Pochettino’s team.
But these are the sort of selection headaches which show that they have moved on from being a club with a lack of squad depth to one where a €75m signing is not necessarily guaranteed a starting berth.
