According to football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, Hugo Lloris is set to sign a new contract with Tottenham, with the deal ‘expected to be tied up very soon’.

The Lowdown: Lloris still essential for Spurs

With his contract set to expire in less than six months’ time, the Frenchman’s Spurs future was seemingly in doubt. At 35 years of age, doubts had arisen as to whether the goalkeeper would remain at the north London club, with rumours linking the veteran with a return to boyhood club Nice in Ligue 1.

Despite this, the club captain has been vital to the Lilywhites this season, having played in all 18 of their Premier League fixtures so far. The 2018 World Cup winner has conceded just 20 goals in the top flight this season, having provided stability at the back with eight clean sheets

The Latest: Lloris set to sign a new contract with Spurs

In a Q&A for football.london, Gold was asked whether there had been any updates regarding a new Tottenham contract for Lloris.

The journalist duly replied: "That's expected to be tied up very soon. Conte is confident and from what I understand Lloris is keen to stay and his modest demands have been deemed more than reasonable by the powers that be at Spurs so that shouldn't take long at all now talks have finally started. It really should have been sorted a long time ago, not in the final six months of his deal."

The Verdict: Good news for Tottenham

Having arrived at Spurs in the summer of 2012, Lloris is closing in on a decade at the club. Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was always quite complimentary of the Frenchman, claiming that he was "one of the best goalkeepers in the world" after a fantastic performance against Real Madrid in 2017.

Having evidently developed into an ‘outstanding’ player during this time, in the words of Graham Roberts, the 35-year-old’s vast experience is invaluable for Conte and the young players at Tottenham. Even if he fails to play a single league game next season (unlikely as that seems), his presence in the dressing room will be very much worth the money spent on extending the player's contract.

Therefore, this revelation from Gold is very good news for the Lilywhites.
