Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs confident of agreeing new deal for Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur are confident that Eric Dier will sign a new contract this summer, according to Football Insider

Spurs are eager for the midfielder to sign an extension as he will enter the final 12 months of his current deal next month.

Last week, the outlet revealed that discussions were ongoing between the Lilywhites and the Englishman’s representatives after the board decided to change its stance as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A source told Football Insider that early indications suggest that the two parties will be able to reach an agreement in a matter of weeks.

The England international was a firm favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, making more than 200 appearances for the Argentine. He has played 14 games in the Premier League for Jose Mourinho this season, supplying two assists, making 1.4 tackles and averaging 2.6 clearances per game (via WhoScored).

It is fair to say that Dier has quite a roller-coaster of a career during his time at Spurs so far, as he has been troubled by numerous injuries, illness and mixed form over the years.

Although the 26-year-old has struggled for consistency at times, he has worked his way back into contention as he was surprisingly selected at centre-back in the 3-2 defeat to Wolves in early March and registered further appearances after that until football was suspended in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

His versatility is arguably what makes him so useful, as he was shifted to the defence, which earned him four consecutive starts in a row and praise from Mourinho. Moreover, it is worth remembering that the Spurs boss wanted to bring the England international to Old Trafford when he was in charge of Manchester United.

The club are still waiting to find out if he will be banned for the resumption of the Premier League season after being charged prior to football’s suspension. He could face a ban if he is found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute (The Sun).

Nevertheless, with Jan Vertonghen reportedly ready to leave, Mourinho may use Dier as his first-choice defender next season, as he has ample experience at the top levels of the game.
