Speaking in a Football.London Q&A, Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold has issued an interesting claim on summer signing Matt Doherty.
In conversation with fellow journalist Lee Wilmots, the Tottenham insider shed light on why manager Jose Mourinho was so keen on a summer move for the ex-Wolves ace.
Doherty the nightmare…
Speaking on his transfer, Gold claims that Doherty caused Mourinho all sorts of problems in their previous match-ups. Describing the 28-year-old as a ‘nightmare for Mourinho‘, it was apparently a real incentive behind Daniel Levy’s window approach.
Is Doherty the most underrated Spurs signing of the window?
Yes, £15m is a steal
Tottenham also secured deals for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius. Given Swansea City defender Joe Rodon may well join them, it’s hard to argue these last two months have been anything other than fantastic.
The former Wolves defender also comes as a bargain coup at just £15 million and Mourinho will be ecstatic to land a player who caused him real issues.
Bargain of the summer?
Described as ‘absolutely superb‘ by pundit Danny Mills, the right-back is currently in his prime at 28-years-old and comes in as a solid alternative to Serge Aurier.
Both him and the Ivorian will battle for the right-back spot, gifting Mourinho some real strength in depth on that side.
While headline-grabbing swoops like Bale and Vinicius may have attracted more attention, the acquisition of Doherty certainly cannot be underestimated.
An experienced head proven in the Premier League, it’s fair to say £15m is an absolute steal.
