Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Jose Mourinho will get rid of Erik Lamela as he does not see a long-term future for him at Tottenham Hotspur.
When asked if he could see the former AS Roma man at Spurs in the longer term, the former Aston Villa and England international striker claimed to Football Insider:
“No, not at all.
“He’s not the same player he used to be, Lamela.
“When I watch him now, he doesn’t really get past anyone, he doesn’t score or assist.
“I think Jose Mourinho is just playing him because he’s annoyed at Gareth Bale. He’s just playing Lamela because he’s got nobody else to play.
“If Jose Mourinho is given a bit of money, he will definitely get rid of Lamela.
“I think he’ll keep Moura because he’s a good squad player and he does OK when he plays.
“Someone like Lamela will be gone for sure. He’s not really lived up to expectations.”
Lamela has never really done it at Spurs
Lamela has not really done it at the North London club and so it may be time for the Lilywhites to cash in on the Argentina international in the summer transfer window if at all possible.
He has only managed to score a mere 36 goals and make a further 46 assists in 241 games in total in all competitions across the last eight consecutive terms (Transfermarkt), meaning that he has averaged a goal or an assist roughly every three matches, which is simply not a good enough contribution for a man who cost £27m.
Should Spurs sell Lamela?
THFC have plenty of cover out on the wings as well at the moment, with Heung-Min Son, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura and Gareth Bale among some of the players currently at their disposal.
Nonetheless, Agbonlahor seems to think this is time for Tottenham to cut their losses on the 28-year-old and potentially use any money gained from his sale to invest elsewhere and it’s hard to disagree with him.
