Speaking in a press conference, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho confirmed that defender Serge Aurier will miss the match against Ludogorets tonight with a ‘little problem’ – coming just a week before the international break commences.
Aurier, who has seemingly been reborn at right-back since the acquisition of Matt Doherty from Wolves this summer, starring for Spurs and Mourinho, will miss Ludogorets after deciding with the medical team he didn’t want to aggravate an injury issue.
Who has most improved for Spurs this season?
Indeed, the 60-cap international definitely won’t feature tonight, but it’s unclear whether he will be back for Tottenham’s match against West Brom on Sunday.
The Premier League encounter will be Spurs’ last match before a two-week international hiatus, and if Aurier’s injury rules him out of West Brom, it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Ivorian to fully recover alongside Erik Lamela – who has also been confirmed as absent.
Transfer Tavern take
Described as a ‘beast‘ by Alasdair Gold upon signing for Tottenham, the defender attracted mixed reviews from critics and supporters alike for his consistency – with Joe Cole even calling him ‘terrible’.
However, this season, Aurier has shined under Mourinho – potentially motivated by Daniel Levy’s move to bring in Doherty who can challenge him for that starting place.
Spurs’ historic 6-1 win at Old Trafford was a prime example, with Aurier picking up an 8.7 SofaScore rating whilst dominating that right hand side.
He even got on the scoresheet that game as reward for his marauding display, and if he can continue that fine form upon returning, Lilywhites could be in for a treat.
