Speaking to the press ahead of Tottenham’s last Europa League group stage match against Royal Antwerp tomorrow evening, manager Jose Mourinho dropped a hopeful, albeit cryptic, hint over Erik Lamela’s return for the upcoming Christmas and January fixtures.
Lamela, who has been sidelined since early November with a foot problem, is now back in training according to the Portuguese gaffer and could hopefully return in time for a busy end to the month and hectic January.
Mourinho drops Lamela return hint
Mourinho, giving a vital update on his condition to the media this afternoon, dropped a cryptic seven-word hint over his potentially imminent Spurs return for the upcoming December and January fixtures – stating: ‘Hopefully Lamela will be back for that‘.
While the Tottenham boss hasn’t explained exactly when he will return, his hope judging by this seven-word message is a comeback this month or, at the very latest, some time early next year.
Indeed, the former Chelsea boss appears hopeful that he will return at any point in that timeframe, which could encourage Lilywhites as Lamela’s return looks imminent.
Transfer Tavern take
The Argentine, who earned Eric Dier’s praise before being sidelined for his ‘incredible‘ showings, was arguably impressing when given the rare opportunity – averaging more shots per 90 over his limited appearances than regulars Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Steven Bergwijn (WhoScored).
Lamela, despite attracting mixed reviews, could still provide Mourinho with that extra attacking edge as he aims to bring silverware back to Tottenham for the first time since 2008.
Time will tell whether he comes back and makes a noteworthy impact, but one more option going forward certainly wouldn’t hurt.
