Speaking in a press conference ahead of Tottenham’s encounter with Ludogorets in the Europa League this evening, manager Jose Mourinho has refused to rule out a shock early return for attacker Erik Lamela – with a massive encounter against Chelsea also looming at the weekend.
Lamela, who has recently been on the treatment table, aiming to recover from a achilles injury, was unlikely to return in time for Tottenham’s double header over the course of this week – but Mourinho may have dropped a cryptic hint that it could in fact be possible.
Lamela hint dropped by Mourinho
The Argentine did not feature in training yesterday as he is still on the mend from his most recent fitness setback, with defender Toby Alderweireld also out of action due an injury sustained during the 2-0 win over Man City last weekend (football.london).
While Mourinho believes it is highly unlikely Lamela will make the Chelsea clash, Tottenham’s boss has still refused to rule it out completely – dropping a cryptic hint that it is possible he could feature if luck is on Spurs’ side.
“Not tomorrow or Sunday, I think I can say that,” explained the Lilywhites coach.
“I would be very, very surprised if he said he was able to play Sunday.”
Transfer Tavern take
Lamela, who was once described as ‘amazing‘ by the manager, is against the odds to play against Chelsea but the fact Mourinho has refused to rule it out completely could be an encouraging sign.
As Spurs look to keep their place at the top of the table, they will need all the help they can get, and perhaps Lamela could indeed surprise his manager.
