Speaking to Football Insider, regular Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips has admitted that he was baffled by Spurs signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer window – but gladly admits that he got it wrong after the ‘surprise’ club transfer development.
Hojbjerg, who put pen to paper on a Spurs switch in the summer, becoming Daniel Levy’s first acquisition in what was a window to remember for supporters, has since turned many heads with his composed and assured performances.
Has Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg been Tottenham's best summer signing so far?
Yes, without a shadow of a doubt
No, Sergio Reguilon all the way
Labelled as a classic Jose Mourinho signing, the midfield enforcer has averaged an impressive three tackles per 90 in front of the back four (WhoScored).
Phillips wowed by Hojbjerg
So far, you could even say he has outshone more blockbuster purchases like Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius – with the Dane and Sergio Reguilon arguably looking like Tottenham’s most fruitful summer additions as it stands.
Admitting he held reservations over signing Hojbjerg, Phillips has now apologised for his scepticism after a string of impressive showings from the 25-year-old.
“For me, that was a surprise signing,” explained the pundit.
“You do see it every now and then. I do not think I was the only one raised an eyebrow at that signing.
“Even Spurs supporters must have thought, ‘Who have we signed? What are we signing here? Are we really signing a player who will take us to the next level?’
“But credit to the player. I have watched him a lot this season and he is a quality midfielder.
“He surprised me so I take my hat off to him. You have to hold your hands up sometimes because you make judgements and you get it wrong. I certainly hold my hands up and say I have got it wrong.”
Transfer Tavern take
Costing just £15 million, with full-back Kyle Walker-Peters moving the other way, Tottenham have definitely pulled off a masterstroke with landing Hojbjerg.
Jokingly labelled as ‘Zidane‘ by Spurs players and staff, the midfielder could go on to become a real cult hero in north London.
