Paul Robinson has raved over Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld after he scored the winner against Arsenal on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane goalkeeper insists that Jose Mourinho should start Alderweireld for the rest of the 2019/2020 Premier League season.

The 31-year-old earned his third consecutive start in the North London derby and celebrated in style as he headed home the decisive goal to clinch the win. Tottenham's 2-1 victory at home has lifted them above their arch-rivals into eighth in the table, two points clear from the Gunners and only three behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mourinho seems to have changed his mind as he began the Premier League restart with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier at the back, although matters were taken out of his hands as Dier has been banned for four games by the FA.

Regardless, Robinson is delighted that the Belgian has been given a chance instead. He told Football Insider's Dylan Childs: "I have always said that Alderweireld is the best defender at the club and he should play every week. Over the past three games he has proved that.

"Against Bournemouth they were toothless but they looked steadier at the back and they are more secure when he plays. [On Sunday] he popped up with a goal and he has that in his locker as well, he’s a threat from set plays.

"He is a leader on the pitch and he should start every game between now and the end of the season."

It is hard to argue with Robinson on this one, as Alderweireld has actually earned the highest WhoScored rating out of all of his defensive rivals so far. Make no mistake, the Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun throughout the season, although they have only conceded one goal in three games since his reintroduction to the team.

Although Spurs struggled to break down Bournemouth, they still kept an important clean sheet and, at this stage in the competition, picking up points wherever possible is crucial.

While there isn't much between Alderweireld and Dier, as Alasdair Gold notes, the veteran leads by example and leaves all of his talking on the pitch.

Jan Vertonghen, his long-time partner-in-crime, is set to leave this summer but Alderweireld signed an extension in December, keeping him at the club until 2023. The Belgian admitted that Mourinho’s appointment influenced his decision to sign a new deal.
