Tottenham Hotspur: Rafael Benitez has ‘had discussions’ with Spurs

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have now ‘had discussions‘ with out-of-work manager Rafael Benitez, coming after they also held talks with Roberto Martinez.

The Lowdown: Tottenham manager hunt continues…

Spurs are still on the prowl for a new manager since sacking Jose Mourinho in April, with a plethora of names linked with the north London vacancy.

More recently, the likes of Martinez and Benitez have been touted as possible candidates, mainly due to the apparent line that Premier League experience is becoming increasingly valuable to the board.

Earlier this week, Football Insider claimed that Martinez has held discussions with Spurs over the role, but the club are now cooling their interest in the Belgium coach.

The Latest: Benitez holds discussions with Spurs

In their latest update on the situation, Football Insider also believe that Spurs and Benitez have now had discussions over the managerial role, but unlike Martinez, the 61-year-old remains an interesting candidate to the club.

Tottenham latest…

His availability is also a key factor given that he is currently out of work and would only cost his salary and contract demands to employ, with no need for a compensation fee.

Possessing a glowing CV which contains two La Liga titles, along with Champions League and Europa League honours, his record of silverware with multiple clubs is also an attraction for Spurs. Furthermore, the Spaniard is said to be keen on managing in England again nearly two years after leaving Newcastle United.

The Verdict: Not who Spurs should consider…

If chairman Daniel Levy wishes to bring back the Spurs way of playing football whilst reinstalling an attack-minded philosophy into the team, appointing Benitez would be the wrong way to do so.

The Spaniard is known for being a pragmatic, defensive-minded coach – a far cry from the exciting, young and dynamic manager reportedly wanted by Tottenham (Daily Mail).

Despite being called a ‘great manager‘ by former Spurs favourite Mauricio Pochettino, we believe he is a man who the north London club should avoid as they seek out a successor to Mourinho.
