Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has laid into Tottenham Hotspur after Mauricio Pochettino’s side were beaten on penalties by League Two side Colchester United.
Spurs were knocked out of the EFL Cup after shootout misses from Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura condemned the Champions League finalists to an embarrassing defeat that took their season to a new low.
With Tottenham already left battling on three fronts, Parlour criticised the team for not being able to dispatch their lower-league opposition, as their 11-year wait for a major trophy looks set to extend.
Parlour told TalkSPORT: “Realistically, they’ve got two trophies to win this season. Will they get to the Champions League final again? Probably not. Premier League – no chance. So the FA Cup and Carabao Cup were probably the only two they could possibly win, and to go out in the first round, they’ll be very disappointed this morning.
“There’s always going to be lots of people rested during these games, but they still had six international players playing, and they should be well capable of going to a League Two side and getting a result.”
Co-host Alan Brazil then argued whether their run to the Champions League final has hindered their form – which has seen Spurs go without a domestic away win since January.
“There were some amazing nights for Spurs fans – [they] should be on an up,” said Parlour. “People take the mick out of Tottenham fans now, saying ‘well look, where’s your trophies, you haven’t won [anything]?’.
“It’s good getting in the top four, but you’ve got to win trophies. At the end of the season, what can you show for it? It is all about winning trophies.”
Even if Spurs’ incredible run to the Champions League final provided a valid excuse for their form, that would have been fairly contradictory in itself.
Let’s not forget that both victories over Manchester City and Ajax were sealed on away goals, with Spurs fluffing their lines throughout their European campaign, as well.
Though with the FA Cup still up for grabs and the Premier League very much at its early stages, Spurs’ season is hardly over – but there can be little getting away from the fact that their current run does not resemble a squad worthy of winning silverware.
