TalkSPORT host Hugh Woozencroft has urged Tottenham Hotspur to fill the void of Harry Kane by securing a loan deal for former winger Gareth Bale.
Bale has been at Real Madrid since leaving north London in 2013 and had been close to leaving the Santiago Bernabeu following a bid from Chinese outfit Jiangsu Suning in the summer. However, with Bale staying put and Kane expected to miss three months with a hamstring injury, Woozencroft suggested on his TalkSPORT show that Spurs should react by attempting to bring back the Welshman on a temporary deal.
He said: “I truly believe if they’re not going to go and spend something like £60m on a player ready to come in at Tottenham Hotspur, they need to take half of that money and go and get Gareth Bale on loan until the end of the season. [He] knows the club, knows the fans, knows London.
“He’s an absolutely fantastic player. He’s got goals in him, he knows the league – let’s not pretend he wouldn’t be a brilliant addition to Tottenham Hotspur’s team, why not?”
There seems to be flawed logic in Woozencroft’s idea, in that Spurs would be asking Bale – most commonly a right-winger – to fill in for centre-forward Kane.
Essentially, Spurs would arguably be tasking Bale with the same role they would otherwise have given to Son Heung-min or Lucas Moura under similar circumstances to when the pair filled in for the striker when he was out for a prolonged period last season. At present, they appear to remain as Spurs’ best alternatives while Kane recovers, while bringing Bale back would hardly improve their options given the 30-year-old would merely add another wide player to the ranks.
It seems as if the player’s history at Spurs is the main inspiration for Woozencroft’s shout, rather than tackling the issue head-on and identifying a player more suited to the job of filling in for Kane. Whether or not fans would agree with such a move, common sense suggests there must be alternatives out there that would leave Spurs better off in the long run.
