Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Roundup: Muriqi interest, Wanyama offered to Marseille and new Eriksen offer

In this instalment of our Transfer Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Tottenham Hotspur recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.

Interest in Vedat Muriqi

According to a recent report by Sabah, Tottenham Hotspur are believed to hold an interest in Fenerbahce striker Vedat Muriqi. It has been claimed officials watched the forward in action for Kosovo, in which he scored the opening goal of the game in their 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

The report suggests the Turkish outfit might be prepared to cash in on him, despite having only just signed him from Caykur Rizespor, although Spurs would have to make a ‘giant’ offer for them to consider doing so.

Verdict

Muriqi could be an excellent addition to the Spurs squad, should the alleged interest be concrete. Mauricio Pochettino only has Harry Kane available to him at the moment in terms of more-established strikers, whilst the Kosovo international has proven he can find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

The 25-year-old has been a mainstay for the Istanbul giants in the Turkish Super Lig so far, having played every single minute in his three appearances to date (Transfermarkt). In those matches, he has managed to score two goals and averages an impressive five shots per match, whilst also registering 1.3 key passes every 90 minutes.

As highlighted by WhoScored’s formation section, the forward could also be suited to Pochettino’s system as well. Tottenham utilise a 4-2-3-1 system, which is exactly the same as the one he plays with Fenerbahce at the moment.

Victor Wanyama was offered to Marseille

France Football (via Sport Witness) have reported that Victor Wanyama was offered to Olympique de Marseille this summer on a loan deal, with the possibility of turning that deal into a permanent switch next summer for a fee thought to be around €8m (£7.1m).

However, it has been claimed the Ligue One outfit passed on the opportunity to sign the Kenya international as they were focused on trying to sign Valentin Rongier from Nantes, who they eventually managed to get over the line.

Verdict

It is hardly a surprise that Tottenham tried to offload Wanyama this summer and that the Premier League outfit had started to offer him to other clubs in order to get him off the books. The 28-year-old has fallen well down Pochettino’s pecking order in recent seasons, with injuries having likely played a huge role in that – he has missed 47 matches in the last two campaigns, whilst the £63m addition of Tanguy Ndombele will not have helped the Kenyan’s chances any further.

Indeed, the African midfielder also appears to be keen on leaving north London as well, having reportedly instructed his agent to find him a new club (Football Insider), so it seems a real shame that a move to Marseille did not materialise for him.

However, having said that, a move to Club Brugge ultimately collapsed which may leave questions as to what kind of move Wanyama is looking for at this stage of his career.

Christian Eriksen to be offered new deal

Tottenham Hotspur are set to make a fresh attempt to try and convince Christian Eriksen to sign a new contract, according to a report by FC Inter News.

It is claimed that Spurs will offer the Denmark international a five-year deal worth around €7.5m (£6.7m) a year, although there is still some suggestion that they would then try and cash in on the playmaker with a number of Europe’s top clubs interested in him.

Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Juventus were all noted as potential suitors, whilst both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid were said to be interested over the summer.

Verdict

Losing Eriksen on a free would be disastrous, although it would appear that is exactly what could end up happening. The Dane does not appear to be ready to commit his future to Spurs any time soon and the fact that Daniel Levy and the player’s agent reportedly fell out over discussions regarding a new deal last month will not have helped matters.

There is no denying how important the 27-year-old has been to Pochettino’s side over the years, as his 66 goals and 86 assists to his 280 appearances attest to how significant he is to them.

As the report suggests, perhaps, Tottenham are just trying to protect themselves from losing one of their best players on a free transfer, however it would seem at this moment in time that convincing him to sign on the dotted line is a task too challenging to complete.
