Tottenham Hotspur: Jan Vertonghen set to leave Spurs on a free transfer after rejecting new offer

According to The Sun, Jan Vertonghen is likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Football writer Alan Scott claims that Vertonghen might not even complete the rest of the season, despite the Premier League’s plans to restart the campaign. Sources previously told ESPN that the Tottenham defender is looking for a two-year-extension to his current deal but Spurs are refusing to meet his demands.

Although the 33-year-old has not ruled out staying at the club, negotiations between the two sides have stalled and they are yet to reach an agreement. James Olley suggests this could have a knock-on effect and hinder the Lilywhites’ chances of keeping Vertonghen for the remaining fixtures over the coming weeks.

Football Insider recently revealed that the Belgian has rejected the offer on the table and the board are resigned to the fact that they will lose him when the transfer market opens.

His contract is set to expire in June and, although Premier League clubs have agreed to give extensions to players who are out-of-contract before the start of next season, the Spurs star is still considering his options. While he was a favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, he had lost his place in the starting lineup under the Argentine’s successor Jose Mourinho.

Admittedly the veteran has shown no signs of slowing down, despite the fact he has made just 19 appearances in the English top flight this season, making 2.1 tackles per game, averaging 1.6 interceptions and completing a staggering five clearances on average per game (WhoScored).

Indeed, it is unlikely he will be short of suitors if he does leave north London and, coupled with Mourinho putting his faith in Eric Dier, there seems a strong indication that he could be on his way out the door in a matter of weeks.

Furthermore, Vertonghen has reportedly started learning a new language in anticipation of a move away from the Tottenham Hotpsur Stadium. His time with the club could indeed be nearing an end.
