According to ESPN, Lille sporting director Luis Campos will not join Tottenham Hotspur despite rejecting an offer from Newcastle United.
Earlier this week, RMC Sport reported that Campos has asked to be released from his contract after falling out with Lille owner Gerard Lopez, and he had previously been linked with the Lilywhites.
However, sources have told Julien Laurens he is likely to return to his former club Monaco and Spurs are not interested in him. Moreover, he has turned down a big offer from the Magpies, so any move to England appears to be off the cards.
Campos and Spurs boss Jose Mourinho have a friendly relationship and the duo have worked together in the past, famously during Mourinho’s spell in charge of Real Madrid.
This is a major blow for Daniel Levy, as the club have been without a director of football ever since Paul Mitchell left north London in 2017. The Portuguese is widely regarded as one of the best talent scouts in the world, as he has helped discover the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Nicolas Pepe and James Rodriguez in the past.
As it stands, Mourinho will have to cope with a restricted budget on his own in the summer, which will make his plans for a squad overhaul even more difficult. His compatriot has already experienced working under similar conditions, as he transformed Lille into a title-challenging side that finished second in Ligue 1.
Therefore, the club’s failure to bring the transfer guru to England may be one Levy will live to regret in the future.
