Everyone in the Football Transfer Tavern watched in awe yesterday as Roberto Martinez’s Wigan Athletic side deservedly defeated former Premier League champions Manchester City at a packed Wembley to claim the FA Cup.
Among the Wigan players who shone through in the rain in London was Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy who was exceptional in the centre of the park for the Latics.
Unsurprisingly the papers are full of stories linked these Wigan stars with moves away from the club and today the Sunday People suggest that Tottenham have outlined a £10 million move for McCarthy as part of their summer transfer spree.
The 22-year-old signed for Wigan from Hamiliton Academical for £1.2 million in 2009 and has emerged as one of finest young talents in the Premier League.
Spurs have been tracking the impressive youngster for months and think he can add a new dynamic to their side which has struggled after the loss of Sandro to injury.
However Andre Villas-Boas may have to compete with Newcastle for his signature with the Tyneside club ready to move for McCarthy.
Wigan don’t want to lose McCarthy but a £10 million offer may be difficult to turn down especially if they fail to avoid the drop.
